When booking please state if you require the City & Guilds 6150-03 (Water), or the City & Guilds 6150-53 (Non-Water). Both courses cover the same content, but learners sit a different exam at the end.

3 day course
Course Description
Purpose-built by City and Guilds for training in the dangers and safe working practices within enclosed (confined) spaces, this course is aimed at those who will be working in extremely difficult environments that are designated as ‘high-risk’.
Generally a high-risk confined space is defined as a space where a hazard is present that cannot be managed or eliminated. To replicate this environment it is expect that the candidate will carry out their task with a risk present and must wear fill breathing apparatus (SCBA) to carry out this task safely.
High risk confined spaces are extremely complex, require careful planning to enter safely and require dedicated specific controls and rescue arrangements.
Course Content
As well as the use of specialist equipment such as breathing apparatus, winches and more, delegates will use gas detection and resuscitation equipment for use in rescue scenarios. Training is provided for different roles to ensure complete understanding of responsibilities within a high risk confined space.
The following modules are covered in this confined space training course:
- Definition and classifications of a confined space
- Specified risks
- Regulations and duties + preventing the need for entry
- Risk assessment
- Identifying hazards
- Atmospheric hazards and gasses
- Use of gas detectors
- Safe systems of work
- Work permits
- Roles and responsibilities
- Inspection and the use of escape sets and breathing apparatus
- Selection and adjustment of harnesses
- Safe use of tripods, winches and fall arrest equipment
- Carrying out post-hygiene routines
A simulated emergency will arise and candidates must exit the space safely. The training will take place in a descent of at least 3.1metres with fall arrest, tripod and winch equipment into darkness.
All modules are within the principles set out by the National Occupational Standards.
Assessment
Both a written and practical test must be undertaken to obtain the City and Guilds qualification.
